If Trump wins, he’ll owe victory to #NeverTrump

Preparing for the American ice age (part 5 of infinity)

Donald Trump Owes NeverTrump

Donald Trump is defying conventional wisdom in 2016.

It’s time to defy that conventional wisdom one more time.

If Trump wins this November, it won’t be in spite of the #NeverTrump crowd. It will be because of them.

The despicable and arguably irredeemable vote-shaming by Republican Party thugs desperately aiming to get jobs in a Trump Administration does not obscure the obvious but unstated fact: the threats mean that the #NeverTrumpers, the constitutional conservatives, are “in play” like never before.

Remember this, Constitutional conservatives and Libertarians: If you’re not being threatened this year, you’re not being relevant.

If Trump didn’t need your vote, he would ignore you.

The other side of the coin is that you’re “in play” because you have two strengths which Trump needs and won’t admit: you’re principled, and you’re pragmatic.

Principled, because you haven’t gone over to the Hillary camp. Because there is no positive redeeming feature about a Hillary Clinton presidency, not one. Because there is nothing to look forward to with four years of Hillary, where the angry progressives continue to run amok and accelerate the transformation of our country into a socialist, secular state and our culture into a hotter cauldron of seething dysfunctions. Only the avoidance of the negative that is Trump. Worse, Hillary will bore us for four years (at least).

And pragmatic, because you aren’t inclined to waste your vote with the third rate candidates being offered by the third rate third parties which might be on your state’s general election ballot.

The value of the #NeverTrumpers is becoming clear. Your refusal to back Trump (at least publicly, since we are the land of secret ballots), particularly in the face of the terrifying prospect of a second President Clinton, emphasizes the horror of the “binary” choice you’re being told you must make.

As you confront the prospects of a really bad future, either way (assuming we are not delivered from evil by a comet strike or alien attack), you are leading the rest of the population to confront its immediate future: That America’s tipping point might not just be on the horizon, but it might already have been reached.

I contend that you, the #NeverTrumpers, will be responsible not for Trump’s loss, but rather for Trump’s victory. Not because you will inspire a counterreaction by the “Alt-Right” crowd, but because you refused to go along with Hillary, just as you refused to go along with Mister Trump.

“Voting your conscience” does not mean, nor require, that you vote. A non-vote, a refusal to vote, can be just as strong a statement and just as strong a strategic move.

Should Trump win, after Election Day, he will owe a debt of thanks for his victory to the #NeverTrumpers. Just don’t expect to ever get paid back for that debt.
